The shoe matters

17 Apr

When it comes to having new pants altered, it is always best to know what type of shoes you will be wearing.

From running shoes to dress shoes and loafers, ballet flats and sandals, high heels to kitten heels, each shoe has a different heel and so it is always best to have an idea what type of shoe you will be wearing with the pant. Pants come in different cuts and styles and different shoes are worn with different pants. In order to ensure your pants are hemmed to the proper length, it is best to know what length they need to be. It is not recommended to leave a hem `a little long` as this can cause damage to the fibres and fabric and make future alterations difficult.

Parkers Dry Cleaners offers on-site tailoring at three locations and 2 hour hemming services.

What you should know when storing Suede and Leather jackets.

12 Apr

With the winter season coming to an end, it is time to clean and store your suede and leather jackets. Did you know that you should always clean your jacket before storing for the summer months so any soil or stains don’t set into the skins?

Suede and Leathers should be stored in a cool environment. It is not recommended to store your garments in a humid area; the moisture can cause the skins to be weakened and damage the skins.

Always store your suede or leather coat on a broad hanger. This will prevent your garment from losing its shape.

Never store your garments in plastic; the skins need to be able to breathe or they will dry and become brittle and damaged.

It is always best to trust an expert to care for your suede and leather garments. In addition to removing the soil and stains, Parkers Dry Cleaners will redye your garments to bring faded or dull colours back to life.

Winter Clothing Storage Tips

6 Apr

With the winter season coming to an end, it is time to put our winter wardrobes away. To protect your clothes safely and keep them looking like new for next winter here are some tips to follow

  1. Never put away garments that are dirty.  Even if the garment looks clean, it is always best to clean each item before storing for winter. Invisible stains can attract insects just the same as visible stains.
  2. Never store your garments in an attic or basement.  These areas attract moisture and dampness and can cause damage to your garments. It is also important to ensure that your garments are not in direct sunlight; this can cause discolouration.
  3. If storing garments in a container, storage box, or closet, it is recommended that you line the bottom with acid free tissue paper.
  4. When storing heavy garments on hangers, be sure to use the right hanger such as a padded or wooden hanger. Using an improper hanger can damage and stretch the garment

Can Parkers Dry Cleaners make my sweater a full zip instead of a half zip?

2 Apr

Patricia came in to our Yonge and Lawrence location to see if tailors could “work magic”. Her husband bought her a new sweater that has a half zipper down the front, but Patricia did not like half zip sweaters.

If our tailor could not do anything to change the sweater, Patricia was going to give it away to her niece.

Our tailor was able to change the half zipper sweater to a full zipper. Patricia was pleased.

While it is possible to change a half zip sweater to a full zipper, you will lose half an inch to an inch of material.  If the garment “just fits”, it may not fit after the repair is complete.

Can Parkers Cleaners shorten my new pants, if I provide a sample pant?

26 Mar

J.T. has been a regular customer at our Parkers Cleaners location at Yonge and Lawrence for a number of years. Recently, J.T. transferred to our free pick up and delivery service.

J.T. called the other day inquiring about our alteration services. He had just purchased a new pair of trousers and needs to have the pants shortened. J.T. was uncertain on how many inches to shorten the pants, and wondered if it was possible to send in a pair of trousers that currently fit, to be used as a sample for length?

We advised J.T. that while our seamstress can use the sample pant to get the proper inseam measurements, we recommend that the pant J.T. sends as a sample is the same cut and style of pant.
