Some fabrics just scream, “luxury!” They’re the kinds of fabrics that you want to wear for a special occasion and the ones that as soon as you feel them on your skin, immediately signal that today will be a day to remember.

For us, silk is one of those fabrics.

Silk is known for its soft and natural texture as well as for holding onto dyes well, making it capable of appearing in gorgeous colours and turning an ordinary blouse into a statement piece. Whether in a tie, a scarf, or a wedding gown, silk shines.

Now, there are a couple of reasons that some people have a bit of fear when wearing silk. Usually, it’s because, along with representing luxury, it can also represent delicateness and causes that throat tightening feeling you get when you’re outside in your silk blouse and it starts to rain. Sure, silk is a little less all-weather than Gore-tex, but don’t let that stop you! Here are a couple of things to think about when wearing silk.

  1. It is a bit delicate – but that’s why you love it. The size of a silk thread is teeny tiny, which is why it moves so gracefully, but also why people say to stay away from water. Wet silk becomes very susceptible to tearing.
Bottom Line: Be somewhat careful and don’t throw silk in your washing machine.
  2. Water drops aren’t the best, but also aren’t the worst. Water stains are the enemy of silk wearers, but they don’t have to be. Usually, a couple of water droplets can be fixed by a trip to your friendly neighbourhood dry cleaner.
Bottom Line: Don’t panic in the rain – just make sure a pro takes care of it.
  3. Procrastination isn’t your friend. Silk doesn’t love perspiration. There. We said it. Sadly, unless you’re someone who magically doesn’t sweat, you’re going to find that your perspiration will dry on your silk with a little discolouration. Again, this isn’t a big deal, but it needs to be corrected as soon as possible to keep your silk looking its best.
Bottom Line: Wear your silk to a wedding, but schedule a dry cleaning pick up for the next day.

All in all, don’t let your love of silk be tainted by a fear of ruining it. Most of the concerns you probably have can be corrected and even if you spill a glass of white wine on your wedding dress, a spotless dress is just a couple of clicks away.

Now, we wouldn’t leave you without some silk inspiration, so enjoy!
