Family Halloween Costume Ideas (and how to care for them)

Listen up! You only have a couple of weeks left to sew, buy, or gather what you need to dress up for Halloween. That sounded a little stress-inducing, didn’t it? We should rephrase that. You still have a couple of weeks left to put a costume together and trick-or-treat with the best of them! We know; the fall is flying by (in fact, we’re going to pretend that we haven’t already seen some Christmas displays), but Halloween really is right around the corner and we are excited.

After the sugar crash, the staff here at Parkers is usually treated to an influx of costumes and we sure do have fun seeing what everyone dressed up as each year. While intricate historical costumes are definitely a favourite around here, we all have a soft spot for the over-the-top adorable family costumes that come through our doors. We’ve seen a family of Starbucks drinks, the cast of Stranger Things, and even LEGO.

But have you ever considered what you should do with your costume after Halloween? Sure, you could get rid of it because you don’t really want to wear the same costume for more than one year, but we’ve all had those years when it’s Oct 30 and you still don’t have a costume idea. Rather than miss out on all of the fun or show up as a party pooper without a costume, you could take an old costume and give it a new spin. Have a cat costume? Add a mask and some lock picking tools and you’re a cat burglar. Doctor costume? Add a name tag with any television doctor’s name and away you go!

Plus, if you have kids, you might be able to recycle costumes among siblings or keep them for playing dress up. When you’re a kid, every day is a good day to look like a princess or a ladybug!

Regardless of how you intend to use your leftover Halloween costumes, one thing is certain: they need to be cleaned. At Parkers, we see a lot of costumes on November 1 because a holiday where the main event is eating candy tends to be a holiday with a lot of laundry. You can schedule your Halloween dry cleaning pick up now and we’ll get all of your costumes ready for the next time you need to dress up!

Here are some of our favourite family costumes this year to get your creative juices flowing.
