A little help with spring trends

It seems like overnight, the clothing store windows have suddenly filled with bright colours and fresh styles for spring, building anticipation for a change from this sludgy winter weather. Unfortunately, this new hope for the coming season can also bring a little anxiety as we all try to figure out how to tie in the somewhat complicated spring trends that are popping up. Bold mod influences, lace dresses, crazy frills, sheer fabrics, and tons of leather can feel overwhelming to incorporate into our day-to-day life.

Luckily, Flare Magazine asked Toronto fashion bloggers Maleah and Brittany Sparks to demonstrate how the highlights from spring runways can be converted into everyday style, using classic pieces and tame neutrals to transition these trends seamlessly into anyone’s closet.

To avoid over-the-top lace, or making this trend seem like a bad 1980’s wedding look, Maleah and Brittany start by pairing elegant lace with more structured and solid accents to make their outfits more edgy.

Lace

Maleah: “I love how feminine lace is, but I didn’t want to go so far as wearing a lace dress. Instead, I paired a lace top with high-waisted trousers to create a look that wasn’t over-the-top feminine. I finished the look with chunky wedge heels and an oversized clutch.” (Flare)

With more flowing styles in shirts and tunics being introduced this season, the twins suggest that we stay conscious of our silhouette when wearing sheer fabrics.

Sheer

Brittany: “It is very easy to go wrong with sheer. Pair it with something too tight, you end up looking a little wild. Pair it with something oversized and you end up looking frumpy. I found that these silk snakeskin shorts were a great balance of the two. I finished the look off with a waist belt to give my body a little bit of shape—it did the trick!” (Flare)

Brittany and Maleah are embracing grunge this fashion season and aren’t afraid to dust off that old rock band t-shirt!

Leather

Brittany: “When I think of the ’90s, the first thing that comes to mind is leather. I am a huge fan of everything and anything leather. I don’t think I will ever get enough. I was ecstatic to snag these Maison Martin Margiela x H&M leather pants after their launch. They are now my new go-to pants, no matter what the occasion.” (Flare)

The first thing we noticed about these spring trends is that they include a beautiful variety of different fabrics and textures. The second thing we noticed is that a lot of these garments will require special care to keep them looking as they should. If you’re thinking about incorporating leather or lace into your wardrobe this spring, keep in mind that proper care is essential.  We’re experts when it comes to caring for leather and lace here at Parkers and would love to help keep you looking your best this spring!
