5 Tips for Better Home Laundry Results

Let’s face it. Doing laundry isn’t anything like it is in fabric softener commercials. The sun doesn’t beam in as we shake perfectly white fluffy towels from our dryers. In fact, sometimes it’s dark out because nighttime is the only spare moment we have to sort through the pile accumulating in the corner of the laundry room.

It’s smelly. It’s unpleasant. It needs to be done.

One of the biggest complaints we hear from our customers is that their home washing machine isn’t getting their clothes clean. While we are dry cleaners and custom clothing care providers, we know that you don’t necessarily want to send all of your clothes to us.

Here are some tips for getting the best results out of your home washing machine!

1. Lay the groundwork before you wash

It isn’t enough to throw that pile of dirty clothes in the washer and hit “start”. Checking pockets, pretreating stains, and sorting items (colour, fabric type, amount of soil) will make a huge difference in the results you can get out of your home washing machine.

2. Choose wisely

Pay attention to both the water temperature and cycle for each load. Each washing machine is different, so get to know your machine and pick your cycles accordingly.

3. Measure – don’t just eyeball it

Very few people can accurately measure an amount of liquid by its stream from the bottle, so please just measure. Inconsistent measuring is one of the most common laundry mistakes and is really simple to avoid!

4. Don’t over pack

We’re all guilty of wanting to do as little laundry as possible. For some people, this means that they jam three loads into one and hope that the giant solid block they’ve punched down will somehow come out clean. We probably don’t need to tell you that it won’t.

5. Remove the load ASAP

All of that hard work pretreating, sorting, choosing the right cycle, measuring the additives, and loading correctly can go down the drain if you leave your load in the washing machine after it’s done. Hang what can’t go in the dryer and then sort everything else by weight and fiber content to achieve quicker drying results.
